Bengal win thriller by 9 runs

Bengal notched up a thrilling 9-run victory against Tripura in their Elite group C match in Vijay Hazare Trophy to make two wins in a row at Cheepauk today.Electing to bat first Bengal put up a total of 272 runs losing 9 wickets in 50 overs riding on skipper Manoj Tiwary's fluent half-century.
A fine 67 by Manoj Tiwari was cut short by an unfortunate mixup when the skipper was run out. But runs from Sudip Chatterjee (44) and Anustup Majumdar (48) ensured Bengal put up a challenging total.
Later Manoj said: "I am happy to get some runs. The run out was unfortunate. But the more important thing is that we won. The boys shower a lot of discipline in shutting Tripura down."
"It was important that I played a big innings as wickets were falling at the other end. But we put up runs on the board and that is a start. However, there can be no complacency. A lot more has to be done," he added.
Tripura batsman SK Patel's unbeaten century went in vain as they were restricted to 263/4 while chasing a target of 273 runs.
After Avimanyu Easwaran's (20) early departure Tiwary who smashed 67 was well assisted by Sudip Chatterjee (44).
Nirupam Sen Chowdhary removed Tiwary to reduce Bengal to 167/5 as Anustup Majumder (48) played a steady innings along with Prayas Ray Burman's unbeaten 25 to steer Bengal towards a fighting total.
Tripura bowler Rajat Dey took 4 wickets for 48 runs.
While chasing Tripura openers gave them a dream start as Patel remained unbeaten on 135 while Chowdhary smashed 53 before Sayan Sekhar Mondal caught him off Burman.
Despite Patel's magnificent knock Manoj and men with disciplined bowling attack restricted Tripura 9- run short off the target to register their second victory of the tournament.
Burman along with veteran pacer Ashok Dinda took 2 wickets apiece for Bengal.
