Weather continues to play foul
17th November 2017
Sri Lanka diminished India’s innings to 74 for five after 21 overs could be played today as poor weather continued to play foul at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata here today.
Lahiru opened the bowling finishing the last ball of the over.
The weather appeared just about the perfect to have everything in store to spice up the second day and fifteen minutes being added to the pre and the post lunch session each added to the mounting expectations.
Ajinkya Rahane who had long been making attempts to play his strokes well was caught short of timing and coordination. A floater outside of the off stump with little natural variation from the pitch and what better for Rahane to fail to restrain his raging temptation to go for a cover drive on the rise. Outrageous as it was but the delivery took a thin inside edge to the keeper sending him off the field.
With the wicket providing the right amount of assistance in swing and bounce, Suranga Lakhmal’s overwhelming spell continued to haul heavy on the Indian counterpart with Dasun Shanaka adding to the sting. The right arm pacer exhibited some real aptitude claiming two wickets each of Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin today.
Ashwin who failed to check his stroke, played a half-hearted shot to a length ball that pitched outside of the off stump to be caught on backward point. With Ashwin being sent off for a low purchase by Dasun Shanaka, India’s innings stayed disrupted due to intermittent showers until it was called off for today.
At stumps Cheteshwar Pujara and Wridhhiman Saha were batting at 47 and 6 respectively after the play was called off following 21 overs of gameplay.
