Jhulan Sehwag ring Eden bell
21st September 2017
A mini history was created at the Eden Gardens as for the first time a woman cricketer rang the Eden bell to signal the beginning of the India Australia tie at the ground here. The bell was rung by the lead bowler of the Indian eves Jhulan Goswami along with former India opener Virender Sehwag.
In a recent tweet posted by BCCI’s official Twitter handle, Sehwag and Jhulan signalled the start of play at the Eden Gardens. The Tweet read, “Former #TeamIndia batsman @virendersehwag [ Virender Sehwag] and @BCCIWomen [Indian women’s cricket tean] all-rounder @Jhulan_Goswami [Jhulan Goswami] ring the bell at Eden Gardens #INDvAUS”
“It is a great honour to be invited to ring the Eden bell. And to do it alongside Virender Sehwag means a lot as he is a great human being and a great supporter of women’s cricket. I am truly grateful to CAB for remembering me and giving me this rare honour,” Jhulan told CAB.
While Jhulan Goswami is the highest wicket taker in woman’s cricket, Sehwag was one of the most explosive batsmen in world cricket with 15 centuries to his name in the shorter format of the game. He was also part of the world cup winning Indian team in 2011.
The match is also significant for two other reasons. This is the 100th ODI for Steve Smith and 300th ODI for MS Dhoni. This is also Australia’s first ODI at Eden Gardens after 2003.
