Bengal restrict Kerala to 265/4 on Day 1 in Ranji match
9th February 2024
Bengal displayed a disciplined bowling effort, but Kerala, recovering from their early setbacks, reached a respectable score of 265/4 at stumps on Day 1 in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match at the St. Xavier's College Ground in Trivandrum, on Friday.
For the visitors, Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal (1-40), Akash Deep (1-55), Shahbaz Ahmed (1-59) and Ankit Mishra (1-53) were impressive with the ball.
For the hosts, Sachin Baby was superb with the bat, scoring a fighting unbeaten 110. He was well supported in the other end by Akshay Chandran (76 batting).
With the home side struggling at 112/4, the duo came to the team's rescue, adding a much-needed unbeaten 153-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Earlier, opting to bat in a must-win match for both the sides, Kerala dealt an early blow in the seventh over when Rohan S Kunnummal (19) was sent back by Suraj with team's score just 26.
Despite the early breakthrough, Bengal didn't hold back as Akash Deep managed to get rid of the incoming batter Rohan Prem (3) to reduce Kerala to 40/2 inside 12 overs.
However, Jalaj Saxena (40) and Sachin looked good in their brief 42-run partnership, but their stand was broken by left-arm spinner Mishra.
To put Kerala under more pressure, Shahbaz sent star batsman Sanju Samson packing for just 8 to put the hosts in trouble at 112/4.
From there on, against the run of play, Sachin and Akshay got together, playing sensibly while also scoring runs to bail the team out of trouble and put Kerala in a good position at the end of the day.
