Shahbaz’ fighting 100 not enough as Bengal go down to
Haryana in Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinals

On a day when most of Bengal batsmen found the going tough against a quality Haryana bowling line-up, all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed smashed a fighting 100, but his valiant effort was not enough as Bengal went down by 4 wickets in the quarterfinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Rajkot on Monday.
Put into bat, Bengal batters Abishek Porel (24), skipper Sudip Kumar Gharami (21) and Anustup Majumdar (14) all got off to fine starts but failed to convert it into big ones.
Despite wickets at the other end, Shahbaz held fort to score a superb ton to help team to a respectable 225 in 50 overs. In his 118-ball innings, the left-hander struck four boundaries and four sixes.
For Haryana, Yuzvendra Chahal (4-37), Sumit Kumar (2-27), Rahul Tewatia (2-32) and Nishant Sindhu (1-30) were impressive with the ball.
In reply, despite being reduced to 14/2 inside 5 overs, Haryana got the done job, chasing the total down to score 226/6 in 45.1 overs, thanks to a fine 102 by Ankit Kumar.
For Bengal, Mohammad Kaif and Pradipta Pramanik bagged two wickets each while Ishan Porel and Shahbaz took one each.
