17th January 2023
Cometh the hour, cometh the man and in came Anustup Majumdar. The experienced batter has been in superb form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season and Tuesday was no different.
On a challenging Lahli pitch where most batters find the going tough, Anustup produced a gem of an innings smashing a fighting unbeaten 137 to power Bengal to 335/6 at stumps on Day 1 against Haryana in their Elite Group A match at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium.
Abhimanyu Easwaran (57) and Abishek Porel (49) too impressed with the bat as Bengal overcame their early struggles to post a massive total at the end of the first day.
Put into bat on a chilly morning, Bengal got off to a positive start with openers Karan Lal (20) and Easwaran not letting the Haryana pacers grab the early advantage.
As thr duo looked in total control, Sumit Kumar dismissed Lal in the 10th over to put a check in their scoring.
Incoming Sudip Kumar Gharami (10), in fine form in the last few games, made a good start to his innings but his stay in the middle was short-lived.
Despite wickets at the other end, Easwaran kept his cool and continued his rich form scoring another half-century.
But Haryana made a brief comeback into the match when Harshal Patel brought himself back into the attack to dismiss set batter Easwaran followed but skipper Manoj Tiwary (1) to put Bengal in the backfoot at 109/4.
Despite the quick wickets, Anustup and debutant Suvankar Bal held the innings firmly to add a vital 92 runs for the fifth wicket to take team past the 200-run mark.
After a well constructed 97-ball 30, Suvankar was unluckly to be dismissed in the 59th over.
Abishek came in to give a fine support to Anustup as the duo gathered crucial 95 runs for the sixth wicket.
After the dismissal of Abishek, Anustup and Pradipta Pramanik (23) piled on some quick runs to remain unbeaten at the end of the day as Bengal breached the 300-run mark.
