Gharami, Manoj power Bengal to superb win over Baroda
13th January 2023
Young Sudip Kumar Gharami along with the experienced Manoj Tiwary rose to the occasion with match-winning half-centuries each to steer Bengal to a stunning seven-wicket victory over Baroda in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A clash at the Bengal Cricket Academy in Kalyani on Friday.
Chasing a tricky 177 to win, Gharami (76 not out) and skipper Manoj (60 not out) gathered an unbeaten 126-run partnership for the fourth wicket to take team over the line as Bengal scored 179/3 on the fourth and final day.
The win helped Bengal bag six crucial points which eventually put the Laxmi Ratan Shukla-coached side to the top of Group A with 25 points from five games, with three wins and two draws. While Uttarakhand, with 23 points from five games, are in the second spot.
Earlier, resuming the day from overnight score of 53/3, Gharami and Manoj executed their plans perfectly denying the visitors an early breakthrough.
The duo were in total control on a fourth day pitch as Baroda bowlers were desperate in search of a wicket.
Their wait continued as Gharami, extending his rich form this season, struck 11 fours and a six in his 140-ball innings to make it worse for the visitors.
Without being troubled much, Gharami and Manoj got the job done in style to seal a memorable victory at home soil.
Bengal will next take on Haryana in Lahli starting on Tuesday followed by their last Group stage match against Odisha at the Eden Gardens from January 24.
