Earlier, opting to bowl, Bengal started the proceedings on a high as Ishan and Pritam dismissed both UP openers with no runs on the board inside three overs.
Incoming batsman Priyam and skipper Karan Sharma (10) looked to build a partnership but Ishan had other plans.
A fine delivery by Ishan cleaned up Karan to have the visitors in trouble at 26 for 3.
Despite wickets tumbling, Priyam and Rinku played positively to gather some quick runs to take team past the 100-run mark.
Both the batsmen brought up their half-centuries to bail the visiting side out of trouble.
But soon after the dismissal of Priyam post lunch, Bengal bowlers sensed the opportunity and reduced UP to 119 for 5.
But Rinku played a counter-attacking innings to take team past the 150-run mark.
Pritam got the better of the well-settled Rinku with team's score at 178 to bring huge sigh of relief in the Bengal camp.
From there on, Bengal bowlers completed the formalities to bowl out UP for 198.
"I am happy to restrict them below 200. Ishan bowled well and I am happy with his performance. We may have lost four wickets but I am still confident that we will make a comeback tomorrow," Bengal head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla said after the day's play.
