1st December 2021
A five wicket haul in the second innings and a match figures of eight wickets by debutant leggie Siddharth Singh ensured that the Bengal U19 team romped home against Bihar defeating them by 10 wickets in the Cooch Behar Trophy today.
Incidentally the team had 8 debutants. The only seniors were Abhishek Porel, Taufik Uddin Mondal, Debopratim Halder and Ayush Kr Singh.
Bihar batting first had scored a modest 139 to which Bengal posted a robust 269. However, Bihar failed to put up any resistance in the second innings also and folded up for 189 leaving Bengal with a paltry 59 runs to win.
While Taufik Uddin and Milind Mondal triggered the breakthrough in the second innings, Siddharth was unplayable thereafter. He ran through the top and middle order with Milind in company as Bihar innings folded up in 77.5 overs.
Milind returned with figures of 3/48 from 18 overs, while Siddharth had 5 wickets to show for his 47 runs from 14.5 overs. The Asansol boy had earlier in the first innings scalped three wickets for four runs from seven overs.
Chasing 59, the Bengal openers Ayush Kr Singh and Abhishek Porel remained unbeaten on 23 and 36 respectively to see the game through. Bengal got seven points (6+1) as a result putting them in a healthy position in the group.
“Fantastic team effort. The bowlers did their job, the batters also contributed and filled in. Abhishek led from the front, Toufik contributed with bat and ball, Rahul batted well when needed. Then Siddharth, Milind and Toufik contributed with ball. The team fielded well and then reached the target without losing a wicket. It was a satisfying outing,” Devang Gandhi, U19 coach said.
