Bengal beat Baroda
5th November 2021
Bengal registered their second victory on a trot in Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament defeating Baroda by two runs in a hard fought tie at Guwahati today.
Bengal won the toss and elected to bat and registered only 146 for 7 despite a bright start from opener Avishek Das (35 off 27balls).
Baroda fell two run short in their chase finishing at 144 for six despite skipper Krunal Pandya's 57 not out.
Bengal innings progressed in a stop and stuttered manner as the top and middle order batters failed. It was a 40 run partnership between Shahbaz (34 off 25 balls) and Ritwick Roy Chowdhury (21 off 16 balls) that gave the innings momentum. A 12 run cameo by Akash Deep right at the end propped up the Bengal innings.
Skipper Sudip Chatterjee said: "Terrific team effort it was. When the situation was hard, our bowlers delivered well, bowled in the right areas and kept the pressure on for 20 overs. Shahbaz has bowled well, Akash Deep and Mukesh bowled superbly in the last two overs, every bowler has done their job well. According to the situation everyone is hungry to perform, that's good for the team."
"We believe till the last ball that we can win. While batting the situation became tough in the middle and Shahbaz, Ritwik stitched a crucial partnership to steady the team. Everyone in the team believes about winning matches from difficult situations," he added.
In reply Baroda never really picked momentum leaving skipped Pandya to wage a lone battle. For Bengal Shahbaz capped is prowess in batting with two vital wickets.
"It was a tricky wicket to bat. It turned and the ball behaved awkwardly. We knew 146 was a good score on this wicket. When I was bowling I got some help from the pitch. But Writtick created pressure at the other end not giving away runs. It was a good day," Shahbaz said.
Bengal have 8 points from two games.
