Assam, Odhisa begin with wins
29th January 2017
Assam and Odhisa registered wins on the opening day of the East Zone qualifiers of the Syed Mustaq Ali T20 tournament at the Eden Gardens today.
A fine all round show from Amit Verma helped Assam etch a four wicket win over Jharkhand in the opening tie of Mustaq Ali T20 Tournament here at the Eden Gardens today. Amit’s scintillating stroke play and prowess with the ball made sure Assam bag 4 points from the game.
Earlier, Assam called correctly at the toss and chose to field. Jharkhand put up a respectable 133 for the loss of nine wickets. The morning dampness in the wicket limited the batsmen to restricted stroke making and Assam continuously chipped away at the wickets. Virat’s Singh’s 26 of 16 deliveries up the order and Varun Aron’s late burst of 16 off 9 balls gave Jharkhand total some respectability.
For Assam, Abu Nechem Ahmed and Amit Verma took three wickets apiece to break the backbone of Jharkhand’s batting.
Assam’s start was not that good either losing three quick wickets for 51 runs before Shibshankar roy and Amit Verma came together. Shib scored a fine 34 off 21 balls, before falling to Kaushal Singh. But Amit carried his bat to finish at 55 not out of 41 balls with four sixes and three fours.
In the second match of the day, Odhisa beat Tripura by 10 runs in yet another low scoring game, thanks to an all round show by Deepak Behera. A late flourish of 24 off 15 balls and then two wickets swung the game in Odhisa’s favour and gave his side 4 points.
Tripura won the toss and elected to field. Though A K Sarkar and A S Majumder took five wickets among themselves, Odhisa put up a fighting 131 led by some meaty middle-order batting by skipper Biplab Samantaray (22), Abhishek Yadav (23) and Arabind Singh (23).
In reply Tripura's run chase never got off to a good start. With the exception of Gurinder Singh 28) none of the players contributed. Dhiraj Singh (3) and Deepak Behera (2) were the wreckers-in-chief, while two horrible mix ups by Tripura batsmen and coupled with some smart fielding led by Odhisa skipper put paid on any hopes. Tripura innings finished on 121 for 8 wickets.
