30th September 2016
There was a buzz among the motley crowd that had gathered at the iconic Eden Gardens on the morning of Mahalaya that also signifies the beginning of Devi Paksha that will usher in the biggest festival in this part of the world--Durga Puja.
They were not disappointed a bit. For walked out two legends Kapil Dev and Sourav Ganguly to ring the bell for the first time at Eden Gardens. Made of pure silver, weighing 107 kgs, the bell is over two feet in diameter making it look a resplendant piece of metal.
Kapil Dev, the former legendary all-rounder and India captain, rang the bell in presence of CAB President and Prince of Kolkata Sourav Ganguly to mark the start of the second Test between India and New Zealand. The two teams lined up on the ground facing the bell and once it was rung exactly at 9.30 am, the umpires officialy started the game.
Like Lord's, this is the first instance where a bell was rung to signal the start of a day's play in an Indian stadium.
