Bengal takes one point from TN tie
16th November 2016
Bengal survived a scare thanks to a patient knock from Sreevats Goswami (61) sealing a draw against Tamil Nadu today at Rajkot. Bengal scored 337 in the first innings to concede a lead of 17. Bengal managed to score 196 for 9 in the second innings.
TN gets 3 points, while Bengal will have to be happy with one. Sreevats Goshwami and Aamir Gani (45) put on an 87 run partnership for the sixth wicket to save Bengal reeling at 66 for 5 at one point of time. The Bengal top order for once failed to score freely today as Vignesh K and Aswin Crist made merry.
Sayan Ghosh stood at the crease for 90 balls scoring 28, while Sudip Chatterjee who got a ton in the first innings got a duck. Skipper Manoj Tiwary could only manage seven runs.
Ashoke Dinda made a quickfire 38 off 25 balls to add some shine the scoreboard. Among the bowlers, M.S.Washington Sundar topped the bowlers table taking 3 for 29.
Manoj Tiwary later said: “Yes it was a bad day in office. We were also unlucky. Last evening they should have been out and we should have got the first innings lead. But some catches dropped short, top edges fell away from fielders, there was a boundary from bye and one from the helmet. But these things happen. We got the wicket in less than 18 balls today.”
“In a way it is good that this jolt has happened when we are in a good position on the points table and we have time to come back. It is a wake-up call for the team. They need to shrug off any complacency and perform. Next match we are playing against Baroda in Lahil. All matches have given results there. We will strive for six points there,” he added.
But Manoj is taking away few positives from the match. “The commitment from the players is important. We have failed as a batting unit for the first time this match. The players are young, they have to put this match behind and get back to their best in the next match.”
Asked if Sudip will be fit before the next tie, he said: “The physio will work with him. I hope he will recover.”
Bengal will be playing their next match against Baroda staring form November 21 at Lahil.
