Bengal U23 enter semifinals
7th February 2018
The Bengal U23 team today waltzed into the semifinals of the National League Cum Knockout One-day Meet beating Jammu & Kashmir by 6 wickets today.
Bengal won the toss and elected to field a decision that was vindicated by the bowlers as they never allowed a moment of reprive to the J&K batsmen. Reduced to 31 for 3 within 10 overs they were in deep trouble before Md Haziq Bhat and Shubham Singh Pundir put on 45 runs for the fourth wicket to provide some resistence.
Bhat scored a fine 51 and was ably supported by Shubham for his patient 27. Once they were gone J&K fell like a pack of cards folding for 135 in the 41st over. Amit Kuila with 3 wickets for 17 bowled a devastating opening spell, Prayas Burman's guile had little response as he picked up 2 wickets.
Coming out to bat, the Bengal began shakily losing their first wicket for 10. But that was a wakeup call the team needed. An unbeaten 43 from Subhankar Bal, fine 36 from Sourav Pal and a measured 22 from Junaid helped Bengal race to the finish. They reached 137 in 31.4 overs to earn a facile victory.
Suvankar played the role of an anchor around whom the batting propelled. His 43 not out was as valuable an innings as one could play. He held the reigns of the match and saw Bengal through.
