Vidarbha snatches a memorable victory

21th December 2017
Vidarbha showed proficiency by making an amazing comeback from the jaws of defeat to qualify for their first ever Ranji Trophy final beating Kartanaka by 5 runs in an enthralling semi-final at Eden Gardens.
Rajneesh Gurbani scalped all three wickets in the morning and his 12 wickets in the match drowned Karnataka. The youngster picked up 7 wickets in the second innings complementing his 5wickets in the first innings.
However, Karnataka showed vigour against Vidarbha bowling.Shreyas Gopal kept his patience and allowed Vinay Kumar to come up with shots.Poor line-length and too many boundary balls eased out the task for Karnataka batsmen.Gurbani and Umesh managed to acquire edges twice but unfortunately for Vidarbha, the edges did not carry to the fielders. Coming from round the up, Umesh missed edge of Gopal's bat by a whisker and the next ball Shreyas Gopal hit a picturesque straight drive. In the 7th over of the day, Vinay hit Gurbani for boundaries in consecutive deliveries. But in the final delivery, Gurbani had the last laugh as he broke the threatening 8th wicket partnership of 37runs between Vinay and Shreyas.the ball took the edge of Vinay's willow and Wakhare took a regulation catch behind the stamp.
Abhimanyu Mithun took an attacking intent as he played his shots to disperse the rhythm of Vidarbha bowlers. Shreyas Gopal on the other hand played second fiddle to Mithun and inching towards victory taking singles and hitting some imperious boundaries in the middle. However, Mithun was lucky to survive scare twice- a run-out and dropped catch. Jaffer dropped Mithun on short extra cover. When Karnataka seemed to have the match in their grip and needed to score only 9 runs, Abhimanyu Mithun played a rash shot and got dismissed scoring 33 runs off 26 balls with 5 boundaries. The 48 run 9th wicket stand almost guided Karnataka to victory. At 189/9, Arvind handed out the task to accompany Shreyas in the middle. Arvind dodged well but a surprising single in the last ball of Umesh over made him to face more dangerous Gurbani in the next, with 6 more runs needed to score. Sniffing a chance Vidarbha went all out and Gurbani did not disappoint as he scalped Arvind in the very first ball to guide Vidarbha to a famous victory.
Karnataka was bundled out for 192. Gurbani finished with 7 wickets giving away 68 runs only.
