From Engineer to BCCI Umpire: Dream come
true for Rahul Roy
5th July 2025
It is undoubtedly a dream come true moment for Rahul Roy. From a B Tech degree holder to working as a high-ranked government employee to eventually becoming BCCI umpire, Rahul has experienced it all in the last few years.
The wait for a BCCI umpire from Bengal finally ended as Rahul, after seven long years, was selected as a board umpire, making everyone at The Cricket Association of Bengal proud.
Initially after pursuing B. Tech degree, Rahul worked at IBM. He then cleared Staff Selection Commission examination to get a job at Central Excise Department where he met BCCI Umpire Abhijit Bhattacharya.
Crediting CAB President Snehasish Ganguly, CAB Tour, Fixture and Technical Committee Chairman Sanjay Das, CAB Umpires Committee Chairman Prosenjit Banerjee and Bhattacharya for all his success and constant support, Rahul said, “I would like to thank four important people, Snehasish sir, Sanjay sir, Prosenjit da and Abhijit da for guiding me and supporting me throughout my journey in becoming BCCI umpire. Without their support, it would have been difficult for me to achieve this.”
“I hardly knew anything about umpiring when I joined government job and it was Abhijit da who motivated me to appear for the CAB umpire’s examination. I passed the exam and started my journey as an umpire.
“After gathering experience in this field, the workshop conducted by CAB with ICC umpire Nitin Menon helped me immensely and after that I appeared for the Board’s umpire exam,” added Rahul, who dreams of becoming as successful as Mr Bhattacharya.
Rahul was among four umpires from Bengal who appeared for the board’s examination and it was Rahul who cleared it.
