Gala start to inaugural Jagmohan Dalmiya

The giant LED board at the backdrop continuously flickered images of Mr Jagmogan Dalmiya, the high-priests of world cricket were hobnobbing among themselves and the players of the two teams sat in closed circles knowing their paths would cross in 48hrs times.
It was a perfect picture for the first Jagmohan Dalmiya Annual Conclave. The air was charged with a sense of pride that a man who transformed world cricket was from this state association. Then CAB President Sourav Ganguly came on stage and welcomed the august gathering before the keynote speakers Mr Thilanga Sumathipala, President Sri Lankan Cricket Board and Kapil Dev, India’s first world cup winning captain, the current Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli and his Sri Lanka counterpart Dinesh Chandimal, were ushered on the stage along with Late Mr Dalmiya’s wife Chandralekha Dalmiya and daughter and son Vaishali and Avishek Dalmiya. What followed was a warm classy round of felicitation where the goodwill and bonhomie was evident.
On this occasion Gautam Dasgupta, Debabrata Bhattacharya, Dilip Ghosh, Prithish Ghosh Chaudhury, Saradindu Pal, Shibaji Dutta, Asit Chatterjee, Debi Ghosal, Biswanath Samanta, Dilip Kr Mukherjee, Birendranath Mitra, Nimai Ch Dutta, Aloke Nandi, D N Biswas, Amiya Kr Auddy, Surajit Kr Naskar, Shibaji Ray, Shib Kr Kalyani, Siddharth Ghosh, Ranjit Ray, A P Ray, Russi Jeejeebhoy, Gobinda Prasad Dutta, Rabi Mitra and Usha Nath Banerjee were felicitated for their contribution to Cricket Association of Bengal in various capacities.
Kapil Dev, welcoming them, said: “When we played cricket there were not many players from Bengal, but we always needed passes. And these gentlemen out here never disappointed us. We thank you all for taking care of us for all these years. I express my gratitude on behalf of my team mates.”
In his keynote address, Kapil Dev called Mr Dalmiya the best administrator the world of sports has seen in the last 50 years and then went on to compare Virat Kohli with Mr Dalmiya and said the current skipper like the great administrator had the power to change cricket; while Thilanga Sumathipala addressed him as a man who could bring about unity among the most divergent group and get the best deals out keeping everybody happy.
