India on course before first test
14th November 2017
The entire Indian test squad trained extensively under an overcast condition ahead of first Test against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens.
Murali Vijay, who was nursing a wrist injury, was first to face the bowl, which suggests Indian top-order bastman might regain the position on return. However, Shami and Ishant Sharma batted for 20 minutes at the outside net. Rohit Sharma, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar joined the batting drill after rolling their arms. Kohli and Rahane played the left-arm spinner sitting on backfoot, also showed some aggressive intent stepping out few times. Ajinkya Rahane said, the sweep and reverse sweeps were not practised to tackle a particular bowler, the batters did not go for those shots for spinners but just to try out all shots.
On the bowling side, the seamers were at their pick, bowling with some real pace and swing. They missed edges by a whisker quite a few times. Even one of Shami's deliveries pierced the net and went on to hit a spectator. While Ashwin implied some variations, his partner Jadeja maintained his line and length. To replicate the lower order's contribution in the critical situations; Jadeja, Umesh Yadav batted over 20 minutes. The chinaman Kuldeep Yadav purchased some turn off the pitch, before switching to batting.
